As a wedding celebrant, I get a lot of inspiration from the ceremonies that I am privileged to officiate over. I had my last ceremony in the weekend as a Mother of 1 and there was one reading that the couples chose which really stood out….
People are like cities: We all have alleys and gardens and secret rooftops and places where daisies sprout between the sidewalk cracks, but most of the time all we let each other see is a postcard glimpse of a skyline or a polished square.
Love lets you find those hidden places in another person, even the ones they didn’t know were there, even the ones they wouldn’t have thought to call beautiful themselves.
To me, this reading not only speaks to couple about to embark on married life. It speaks to everyone. So often we see the postcard and we look for or allow others to look at the hidden places. Social media is a real example of how of the postcard perception doesn’t really let us into exactly how a person is feeling or what they’re dealing with.
If and when we allow ourselves to drop into those hidden places we find the great stuff. The real stuff. Authentically sharing beyond face value creates a deeper connections and it also gives other people permission to let others in as well. Pretty cool and a great reminder for us all!
